The Federal Government has been urged to ensure radical improvements in teaching and learning conditions across the country.

United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mattias Schmale, who made the call in Abuja, Thursday,  said there was a need for the country’s decision-makers to prioritize the cost of learning.

He also said there was an equal need to provide teachers and education personnel with good working conditions for professionally qualified teaching.

Speaking at the Second Nigeria National Consultation of the Transforming Education Summit (TES) in Abuja,

Mr. Schmale, who was represented by the UNESCO Regional Education Advisor, Mamadou Lamine-Sow said, the summit was a key initiative to transforming education to achieve accelerated progress and inclusive lifelong education.

According to him, the educational transformation would only happen if teachers were professionalized, trained, motivated, and supported to drive the process of guiding the learners to reach their objectives.

Speaking also at the summit, Minister of State for Education, Hon Goodluck Opiah,   commended global partners for their commitment to the development of education in Nigeria.

He assured that the Federal Government would consolidate on the synergy to move the country’s education sector forward.

In his presentation, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, David Adejo, expressed government readiness to internalize the focus of the global education summit by placing education on top of the agenda of political leaders in the country.

He, however, called for private financing of education as public financing is not sustainable.
