In his bid to boost the free movement of people in Sokoto State, Gov. Ahmed Aliyu has injected 1500 vehicles into the public transportation system in the state.
The vehicles consist of 1000 motorcycles and 500 tricycles, which he said will be releases to people of the state on a credit facility basis.
Announcing the development, Gov. Aliyu said it will help keep youths in the state meaningfully engaged while helping to resolve challenges created in the public transport system by the removal of the subsidy on petrol.
Speaking in a tweet on his X handle, Gov. Aliyu said the injection of the 1500 vehicles comes in the heels of the deployment of cars and buses for public transportation in the state by his administration.
He said the vehicles will be released to interested persons who make an initial deposit of a subsidised percentage of the cost while other payments would be spread over several months.
He said: “I am excited to announce a significant boost to intercity transportation in Sokoto with the purchase of 1,000 motorcycles and 500 tricycles. This initiative aims to create job opportunities for our vibrant youth and address the pressing transportation needs of our growing city.
“These vehicles will be sold to residents at subsidized rates, allowing more people to access affordable transportation. Buyers will be able to acquire these motorcycles and tricycles through a manageable payment plan, starting with a deposit followed by monthly installments until the total cost is settled.
“This initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat youth unemployment and restiveness in the state. In addition to improving transportation options, this move will complement the recent deployment of Toyota Camry vehicles and buses, which are already serving the Sokoto metropolitan area at reduced fares. This is crucial in light of the recent challenges posed by the removal of oil subsidies and the rising cost of living, which have affected transportation costs across the state.
