A new ‘Langya’ virus carried by shrews (rats) is said to have infected dozens of people in parts of China.

The virus belongs to the same family as the deadly Nipah and Hendra viruses, though, there is no evidence to suggest that the pathogen is transmittable from human to human.

The affected patients are said to be mainly farmers with recent history of exposure to animals, and displaying symptoms like fatigue, cough, loss of appetite and aches, with several developing blood-cell abnormalities and signs of liver and kidney damage.

No deaths have been reported yet
