    Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Tanko, Quits

Justice Ibrahim Tanko has thrown in the towel and quit as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Sources close to the Supreme Court said Justice Tank took the action on health grounds.

According to our source, the process of appointing a replacement has comments and it is excepted that Justice Kolawole Ariwoola, who is the next most senior in rank, would be sworn in as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Justice Tanko had come under intense criticism by 14 other justices of the Supreme Court who, in a petition, accused him of inefficiency in the management of the third arm of government.

He was also accused of unwholesome practices including denying the justices their rights and privileges which have hampered effective justice delivery at the court.

Though Justice Tanko denied any wrongdoing in relation to the allegations, the petition was however sent to the Body of Benchers for investigation.

He also blamed his alleged inefficient management of the judiciary on the downturn in the Nigerian economy which had negatively impacted on funding of government business.
