The 10th round of Nigeria-Switzerland Political Consultations was successfully held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on 25th June 2025, reaffirming the commitment of both nations to deepen diplomatic cooperation and mutual development.
The high-level engagement brought together top diplomatic officials from both sides, with Ambassador Janet Olisa, Director of Regions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, leading the Nigerian delegation, and Ambassador Philipp Stalder, Director for Africa at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, heading the Swiss side.
According to the statement signed by the Chief Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, reiterated Nigeria’s strong interest in enhancing its bilateral relationship with Switzerland through consistent dialogue and pragmatic cooperation.
The consultations, a continuation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 8th March 2016, have become an institutionalized platform for both nations to exchange views and align strategies on matters of common interest. This year’s dialogue expanded across a broad spectrum of bilateral and multilateral issues, notably trade and investment, legal cooperation, regional peace and security, and humanitarian affairs.
Ambassador Olisa underscored Nigeria’s desire to leverage Swiss technical expertise and investment potential to bolster economic diversification and regional stability. On his part, Ambassador Stalder reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with Nigeria, particularly in advancing peacebuilding initiatives and expanding legal frameworks that support sustainable development and transparency.
Since the inception of the bilateral consultations, both countries have made tangible progress in refining joint policies and executing collaborative projects. The 10th round, according to the Ministry, marks a significant milestone, not only in diplomatic continuity but also in mutual trust and international solidarity.
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to enhance implementation mechanisms of ongoing cooperation and to prepare for the 11th round of consultations, expected to take place in Bern, Switzerland in 2026.
