Minister, Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, and the German International Cooperation (GIZ) have pledged to establish grazing facilities in rural-based Local Government Areas of the country.
The Minister stated this when a delegation led by the First Secretary and Head of Cooperation,Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany ( GIZ) Dr. Karin Jansen paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja.
According to the Minister,deliberate efforts will be made in fodder production that will be taken to these livestock centres to encourage sedentary livestock production systems.
This was contained in a press statement signed by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Ben Bem Goong.
Murkthar maintained that micro earth dams and boreholes will be provided at such centres in order to ensure all year round grazing for animals.
Emphasis will be placed on pasture and breed production to enhance quality dairy products.
Earlier in her address, First Secretary and Head of Cooperation Dr Karin Jansen told the minister that the GIZ is undertaking some projects across Nigeria and is seeking the cooperation of the Nigerian Government and in particular the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to enhance livestock production in the country.
She emphasized that integrating livestock development into peace building efforts is crucial,adding that the proposed local government grazing reserves as a pilot site is a significant initiative.
Jansen maintained that establishing demonstration ranches in key states could also prove beneficial,allowing herders to experience modern alternatives first hand.
According to her,this may shift perceptions and foster long-term behavioural change.
She assured the Minister that the German Government stands ready to deepen partnership with Nigeria in livestock production and it’s value-chain.
