Sekibo Threatens Wike With Legal Action Over Alleged Defamation

A former Minister of transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo has told the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike to withdraw an allegation of murder made against him (Sekibo) by the minister or face legal action.

He also asked Wike to publicly apologise to him to making the allegation.

Sekibo said that Wike made imputation of murder against him in a public address he (Wike) made at an event where he hosted his political associates from Rivers State on January 3, 2025, in Port Harcourt.

Addressing the event on the day, Wike said: “Ask Abiye Sekibo. He was nominated to be a minister of the Federal republic of Nigeria. Somebody petitioned him that he cannot be a minister. Ask him, the man and the wife who killed them that night. Rivers people, we forget easily… a man and his wife petitioned that you are not supposed to be a minister, they were killed that night, a man and his wife…”

Speaking through his lawyers, Ofonime Ignatius Enoh, in a letter dated January 15, 202 and addressed to Mr. Wike, Sekibo said the imputation of murder against him by Wike was defamatory and libelous.

He gave Wike seven days to retract the statement and apologise to him through public means or risk legal action.

According to the letter, Wike’s allegation reduced Sekibo’s estimation in the eyes of the public as it presented him as a murderer and a criminal unworthy of the respect he enjoys across Nigeria and among his ethnic group.
